Outside Sudbury
Original George Cassidy, egg tempera, painting. The painting measures about 14 1/4 x 17 1/4 unframed, framed it measures 26 x 27 inches. I'm not sure but I think the scene is from up around Elk Lake, any information a viewer could provide regarding the scene would be appreciated.
George Cassidy is a Listed Canadian artist with The National Gallery of Canada, he is known to have painted with A.Y. Jackson of the Group of Seven fame which influenced the style of his paintings. , He was a well known and admired resident of Haileybury until his death in 1987.
He came north to Cobalt as a high school teacher and fell in love with the north. He served during the war years, first as a member of the Algonquin Regiment, then from 1950 to 1954 as Commanding Officer of the Algonquin Regiment, and from 1954 to 1958 held the position of Commander of the 16 Militia Group, eventually achieving the rank of Brigadier-General. During his stint with the armed forces he was a teacher at Cobalt High School. From 1949 to 1971 he held the position of Princpal of Haileybury High School, when he wrote and produced many operettas. He painted throughout his life, and was generous in contributing art work for special events and charitable activities. He authored two books, among them, "Arrow North", the history of the Temiskaming area.
